Your Task Once Discussion Roles are Complete....
Each group will examine/research the images from headstones from various New England burying grounds from the 17th and 18th centuries.
As a group, discuss common images, iconography, epitaphs, etc...
As a group, cosider the public argument stones are attempting to convey and consider "SOAPstone" for each image (SOAPstone ; speaker, occasion, audience, purpose, TONE)
As a group, consider what you know about Puritan society based on your reading of The Scarlet Letter, Ann Bradstreet's "Upon the Burning of our House" (meeting #2 activity), and Young Goodman Brown. Do these images help or hinder those images of Puritan society?

Choose a character from SL and create a headstone for him/her.

Include:
- epitaph (short text honoring the decease. You may research/choose a quote, segment from a person or text, or write one of your own)
- Images (go beyond visual- what would be a visual icon for the person?)
- Argument (how do you want other Puritans to feel about this character?)
- On the back of your gravestone explain the choices you made for your epitaph, images and argument.
